‘I won Treble with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and if he could manage Man Utd so can I – I’d take job now and turn it around’

DWIGHT YORKE believes he could turn Manchester United’s fortunes around if he became manager.

The former striker has thrown his hat into the ring to replace Erik ten Hag if he is sacked this summer.

Ten Hag’s future is in doubt following an eighth place finish in the Premier League, United’s lowest since 1990.

He has insisted the club want him to “rebuild” next term, but United have been linked with Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna in recent days.

However, Yorke has staked his claim for the role after seeing ex-team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer take charge of their old club.

He told the Daily Mail: “The kind of character, the way I come across, know how to coach, the little learning experience I’ve got, the people I’m going to bring in to make that football club better in my backroom staff is very important.

“Manchester United is a job you can’t turn down. It’s too big a job.

“The DNA of football has been there. I’ve proved that I can manage in a short space of time in winning that [the Australia Cup].

“Trust me, if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can manage, I definitely could be a manager.”

Yorke previously managed A-League side Macarthur for eight months before leaving in January 2023.

The 52-year-old won 10 of his 18 matches as manager as well as lifting the Australian Cup.

As a player, he won the treble with United in 1999 alongside Solskjaer, part of five trophies during Yorke’s four years at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer achieved a second place finish and reached the Europa League final during his United tenure.

The Norwegian served as boss from 2018 to 2021 after initially being appointed caretaker manager before getting the job full-time.
