The Blades now sit 10 points from safety with six matches remaining ahead of a midweek trip to Manchester United.

They could even be relegated as early as next weekend after a disastrous campaign following promotion last term.

Wilder was left fuming with his players after the match as he claimed they “wanted to get out” as the goals flew in at Bramall Lane.

Speaking at full-time, he explained: “When we were under, there were a few players that wanted to get out of the place. That can’t be the case.

“I won’t name names, but I think there were a few players out there that wanted to get out of there pretty quickly after the fourth went in, which you can’t have, you just can’t have.

“I can’t accept it. It’s a difficult situation because [of] the lack of players that we’ve got in, you can’t really do anything about it from that point of view but I think there were a few that wanted to get out of there pretty quickly.

“The division is too powerful for us individually and collectively as a group in the longer term.”

Gustavo Hamer grabbed a consolation goal for the Blades as they were comfortably beaten by their relegation rivals.

The results means Wilder’s side are winless in eight ahead of travelling to Old Trafford.

Since returning to the club in December, Wilder has won just two league matches.

Meanwhile, an immediate return to the top flight has already been made harder.

The Blades have been handed a two-point deduction by the EFL for being in default of transfer payments to other clubs.

As a result, the penalty will come into effect when they are next relegated to the Championship.
