UPDATED: Three Killed As Gunmen Attack INEC Headquarter In Imo

Unknown gunmen attacked the facility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Owerri, Imo State capital on Monday morning.

Naija News understands that the gunmen attempted to wreak havoc on the entire buildings at the electoral body headquarters at Port-Harcourt road but were resisted by gallant officers of the Nigeria Police Force manning the facility.

“They were many in numbers, we heard several gunshots, we were very afraid, but the police did not allow them this time”, Daily Sun quoted a source saying.

Subsequent reports revealed that the gunmen arrived at the facility in the wee hour of today in large numbers and began shooting sporadically while they engaged the security officers in a gun duel.

It was gathered that the terror group threw Improvise Explosive Devices (IEDs) into the premises, damaging a part of the building and burning some other properties, including two vehicles.

The policemen, however, reportedly killed three of the hoodlums during the bullet fire exchange while some of the hoodlums escaped with injuries.

“They were many in numbers, we heard several gunshots, we were very afraid but the police did not allow them this time, they threw some local bombs into the premises which caused part of the building to go on fire,” a resident told reporters.

Naija News reports that the state police command is yet to issue an official statement on the said attack.
