Revolutionizing Tradition: “Guurdoon” Dating App in Somalia changing the landscape of Love and Marriage

By Adeyemi Adekunle

In the heart of Somalia, a conservative Muslim society in the Horn of Africa, a digital revolution in the realm of love and matrimony is taking place. Contrary to its Western counterparts, “Guurdoon,” meaning “in search of marriage” in Somali, is not about fleeting encounters but rather about fostering lasting bonds for the purpose of starting a family.

This groundbreaking phenomenon is not merely a testament to the power of technology but also a reflection of how tradition and modernity can harmoniously coexist in a society often misunderstood by the world. With its roots deeply embedded in Somali’s culture, Guurdoon represents a creative fusion of tradition and advancement that has taken the nation by like a cyclone.

Although Somalia known as a territory where conservative values have held sway for centuries, the emergence of Guurdoon marks a significant departure from the norm. Somalis, known for their strong adherence to Islamic principles, have traditionally relied on arranged marriages and familial networks to find suitable life partners. The concept of dating, especially through a digital platform, was largely unheard of until the arrival of “Guurdoon”.

It’s taking a crucial position of acting as tool for the younger generation of Somalis, who have grown up in an increasingly interconnected world, sought a means to balance their desire for tradition with the freedom to choose their life partners. Guurdoon bridges this gap with finesse. It embraces the ethos of arranged marriages, wherein compatibility is a cornerstone, but adds a contemporary twist through digital matchmaking.

Initially designed with a deep understanding of Somali values, but turns out to expand the intrinsic narrative offers a user experience unlike any other dating app. The interface is meticulously crafted to ensure a respectful and conservative approach, mirroring the traditional path to matrimony. Users are encouraged to provide comprehensive profiles, highlighting their values, beliefs, and family aspirations. The emphasis here is on the seriousness of intent, setting it apart from more casual dating platforms.

One of the app’s standout features is its focus on family involvement. Users are encouraged to involve their families in the matchmaking process, reflecting the communal nature of Somali society. Parents and guardians can actively participate in the search for suitable partners, reinforcing the time-honored tradition of family consent.

The Unconventional Path to Finding Love in Somalia

Launched with much anticipation in early October 2022, this robust innovative application for the people of Somalia has already garnered a robust user base, with tens of thousands of subscribers, according to its visionary creators.

On the “Guurdoon” platform, the conventional ‘swipe right’ or ‘swipe left’ paradigm of Western dating apps is eschewed. Instead, prospective users must engage with a series of thought-provoking questions, such as “Choose the profile you prefer: 1. Single 2. Widow,” or “Are you looking for someone who has a job?” The app then utilizes this information to present compatible profiles, putting substance and intention at the forefront of the matchmaking process.

For Rahma Hussein, a 23-year-old nurse, the 23,000 Somali shillings (equivalent to less than one euro on the black market) she paid to access the app have proven to be a wise investment. “It works very well… It’s easy to use,” she affirms. In her words, it offers a more reassuring alternative to the traditional method of meeting strangers, allowing users to inquire about potential partners extensively before embarking on face-to-face encounters.

Even in Mogadishu, the capital city, individuals from various walks of life, such as Abdifatah Adan, a tuktuk driver, have found solace in Guurdoon. “I entered the characteristics I wanted to find in my partner, and the app suggested… about eight people,” explains Adan. His task now is simply to make a choice, highlighting the app’s efficiency in facilitating connections.

The Genesis of Guurdoon: A Marriage-Boosting Initiative

The brainchild behind this unconventional dating app is the Guryosamo association, founded in 2012 with the noble mission of promoting marriage and aiding young people who aspire to marry but lack the financial means to do so. In a country scarred by civil strife since the fall of dictator Siad BarrĂ© in 1991 and still grappling with the insurgency of radical Islamists Shebab, the role of the family as society’s cornerstone had eroded.

Ahmed Abshir Geedi, the director of Guryosamo, explains, “Everything society needed has collapsed, including the family, which is its backbone.” The pressing need to bolster marriages became evident through consultations with religious leaders, elders, and intellectuals. The solution was Guurdoon, a platform where people of all ages could connect and discover potential life partners, catering to the digital inclinations of the younger generation.

However, in a deeply traditional society where 99% of the population practices Islam, Guurdoon represents a seismic shift. As Ahmed Abshir Geedi admits, “the app is something totally new… and some people are confused by its use.”

Navigating Cultural Norms and Technological Skepticism

For many users like Abdifatah Adan, discussing the app with their families is a delicate matter. Cultural norms, concerns about technology’s potential for deception, and the novel concept of a dating app in a society rooted in tradition often lead to secrecy.

Mohamed Yasin, a 35-year-old divorced father, initially hesitated but ultimately embraced Guurdoon, motivated by the desire to find a new life partner. Yet, as with Western dating apps, questions about the authenticity of personal information persist. Muhidin Abdinur, another user, remains undeterred, believing in the purity of his intentions.

In a land where love and tradition collide, Guurdoon stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of relationships in the digital age, a bridge between ancient customs and modern aspirations, where individuals seek lasting companionship amidst a backdrop of deep-rooted values.

Love in the Time of Digital Transformation

As we delve deeper into the world of Guurdoon and its impact on Somali society, it becomes evident that this dating app is more than just a digital matchmaking platform; it’s a catalyst for change in a society where love, tradition, and technology intersect in unexpected ways.

In a society where traditional values and customs have long held sway, the introduction of a dating app like Guurdoon represents a paradigm shift. For centuries, marriage in Somalia has been a sacred institution, deeply rooted in religious and cultural traditions. It’s a process governed by the involvement of families, elders, and the broader community. Finding a suitable life partner has traditionally been a collective endeavor, with compatibility in terms of family background, values, and religion taking precedence over individual preferences.

However, the winds of change have swept through Somalia, driven in part by the influence of technology and the aspirations of a younger generation. The advent of social media and smartphones has connected Somalis to the broader digital world, opening up new avenues for communication and interaction. This digital transformation has inevitably impacted the way people in Somalia approach the search for love and companionship.

Guurdoon: A Marriage-Centric Approach

What sets Guurdoon apart from Western dating apps like Tinder or Bumble is its distinctive focus on marriage. In a society where the institution of marriage holds great significance, Guurdoon aims to provide a platform where individuals can seek meaningful, long-term relationships that ultimately lead to matrimony.

Unlike the swiping culture that characterizes many Western dating apps, Guurdoon takes a more deliberate approach. Prospective users are presented with a series of thoughtful questions designed to gauge their preferences and priorities when it comes to marriage. Questions such as “Choose the profile you prefer: 1. Single 2. Widow” and “Are you looking for someone who has a job?” serve as the foundation for the matchmaking process.

This approach ensures that the individuals using Guurdoon are genuinely interested in finding a life partner, rather than simply seeking casual encounters or short-lived romances. It emphasizes compatibility, aligning with the traditional values that have long guided the Somali approach to marriage.

The Success Stories of Guurdoon Users

The success stories emerging from Guurdoon paint a picture of hope and optimism. Rahma Hussein, a 23-year-old nurse, shares her positive experience with the app, highlighting its ease of use and the comfort it provides in allowing users to get to know potential partners before meeting in person. For her, Guurdoon represents a safer and more convenient alternative to traditional matchmaking.

A tuktuk driver in Mogadishu, Abdifatah Adan,28, found himself presented with eight potential matches on the app, each aligning with his specified criteria. His task now is to make a choice, a testament to the app’s effectiveness in bringing compatible individuals together.

Addressing the Challenges of Tradition and Skepticism
Despite its successes, Guurdoon faces its fair share of challenges in a society deeply rooted in tradition. The app’s departure from established norms has sparked skepticism among some quarters.
