Man Utd recall forgotten defender from loan transfer but ‘are set to ship him straight back out in £8.6m deal’

MANCHESTER UNITED have recalled Alvaro Fernandez from his loan spell at Granada.

The LaLiga club released a short statement confirming United have terminated the defender’s loan spell early.

Fernandez agreed to join Granada on a season-long loan deal at the beginning of the season.

But the Red Devils have recalled the 20-year-old with a view to selling him on a permanent transfer.

Benfica have agreed a £8.6milion deal with United to sign Fernandez.

It is understood there are “still some details to be worked out” before contracts can be signed.

Full-back Fernandez joined United in 2020 as the Premier League giants pinched him from Real Madrid.

But he has failed to win a place in Erik ten Hag’s squad and spent last season on loan at Preston before moving to Granada.

He made 13 appearances in Spain and he could be followed out of Old Trafford by another youngster, Mateo Mejia.

The winger is reportedly set to join LaLiga side Sevilla.

It is claimed Mejia will move without a transfer fee being paid with his contract due to expire in June.

But the deal will include a 25 per cent sell on fee for the Red Devils.
