This led to the arrivals of Real Madrid star Casemiro for £70m and Christian Eriksen on a free transfer.

The club is believed to remain interested in acquiring his services, as Ten Hag sees him as a world-class player that can help improve his midfield.

And in a boost for United, De Jong has told the manager privately that he was happy to join United, according to MEN.

Although the 25-year-old has publicly stated his preference to stay at the LaLiga club.

He has been away from the club during the World Cup as he helped the Netherlands reach the quarter-finals.

Despite hopes of winning the tournament, they were dumped out by eventual winners Argentina on penalties.

United are planning to pair De Jong alongside Borussia Dortmund and England star Jude Bellingham.
