An emotional final conversation with Carlo Ancelotti almost scuppered the dealGETTY

His move to Old Trafford brought about the end of a nearly ten-year love affair with the Spanish giants, whom he made a whopping 336 appearances for.

And a tearful final conversation with Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti after he completed his medical almost saw him perform a sensational U-turn.

The 32-year-old told El Chiringuito: “I’m going to tell you something I never told anyone.

“There was only one time when I had doubts about going to Manchester.

“It was on the Friday. Just about everything was done. I only had to sign.

“I passed the medical and it was done. I only had to sign. I go to talk to Ancelotti.

“I couldn’t train because everybody knew it was done, but I had to be there [at training].

“I entered Ancelotti’s office and he already knew I was going.

“He opened the door, I entered his office… and when I turned around, Ancelotti was crying.

“I said: ‘Why are you crying? You can’t be crying. You cannot be crying.’

“He said to me: ‘I love you a lot and I don’t want you to go.’

“That was the moment when I said to myself… calm down.

“Here there are lots of people who really love me.

“But it was already done. I had given my word [to Man Utd] and my word is more important than anything.”

Man Utd are LUCKY to be seventh in the table… one particular stat is terrible, say Dave Kidd

By Dave Kidd

THE frightening thing about Manchester United’s season is that they should really be LOWER than seventh in the Premier League.

Even during their current run of one win in seven league matches, United’s results have been better than their performances.

Erik ten Hag’s team deserved to lose each of their last three drawn games against Brentford, Liverpool and Bournemouth.

On goal difference, United are ninth in the league, while only seven teams have scored fewer than their 47 goals.

And if we give any credence to ‘expected points’, then that stat would have them 15th in the table.

If Ten Hag’s men lose Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final to Championship side Coventry, it should not come as a major surprise.

Casemiro enjoyed a strong start to life at Old Trafford but has struggled for form this season.

United boss Erik ten Hag has kept the faith in the Brazilian, who believes his under-pressure gaffer is still the man to bring success to the club.

He told CNN: “I’m not the person who decides who should be manager.

“We have qualified people to decide that but [Ten Hag] showed last season he can grow Manchester United.”

United will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, taking on Championship outfit Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final.
