Women’s U20 World Cup: Falconets Breeze Into Q/Final With Second Group Win

An 83rd minute curling  strike from Esther Onyenezide that caught Yoonji Do of South Korea off guard was enough to send Nigeria’s U-20 female team, Falconets to the quarter final in the ongoing FIFA U-20 Female World cup in Costa Rica.

The Falconets beat South Korea 1-0  in their second Group C game on Sunday night, Naija News reports.
Both had played a goalless first 45 minutes with the game heading for a goalless draw, but Onyenezide got the winner in the 83rd minute to secure Nigeria’s second win of the tournament.
Earlier, in the 54th minute of play, Esther Onyenezide’s right footer shot was parried out by Yoonji Do, 10 minutes later, it was Nigeria’s Oyono Omini’s turn keep the ball out when she stopped a 25 yard power drive from Korea’s Eoonyong Lee.

The Falconets started their campaign on a winning note last Friday after beating France 1-0 in their Group C opener.

The coach Christopher Danjuma-tutored side will face bottom placed Canada in their final group game on Wednesday, by 3am Nigerian time.

Nigeria sit on top of the group with maximum six points from two matches. France and South Korea occupy the second and third position respectively with three points each.

While Canada sit at the bottom of the log with no point after two round of matches.

The Falconets are expected to face a team from group D that has defending champions, Japan, United States or the Netherlands in the next round of matches.
Meanwhile, the Black Princess of Ghana crashed out of the tournament, after losing their second game earlier on Sunday.
