The pair’s time playing against one another in Manchester overlapped between 2006 and 2015.

Richards had moved into the City first team two years after Rooney had arrived at Man Utd from Everton.

He then left to join Aston Villa on a permanent transfer two years before Rooney left Man Utd in 2017.

Ahead of the final, presenter Gary Lineker asked whether the pair had ever seen crossed paths while they played in Manchester.

Richards, 35, said: “Well we did didn’t we? A couple of times.

“You were giving it the biggun in Manchester back in those days.”

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer then asked: “What was it, pubs, clubs what was it?”

Richards replied: “Everything.”
