Who is in the England world cup squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup?

THE 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is in full swing, with England one of the favourites to win the competition.

The football tournament is taking place in Australia and New Zealand and the Lionesses’ first match will see them up against Haiti.

Who is in the England world cup squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup?

The 2023 Lioness squad was confirmed at the end of May 2023.

There are a mix of goalkeepers, midfielders, defenders and forwards in the squad – all from a variety of European club sides.

Manager Sarina Wiegman has spoken about her choices for the team, saying: “I have huge belief in this squad and we’re very fortunate to be selecting a fantastic group of players to travel to Australia.

“We know we will face tough challenges from strong teams, and we will have to be competitive from the first match on 22 July. We will do everything to be at our very best again this summer.

“We learned a lot of positive lessons about how to get the players fit, fresh and ready from the Euros last summer and we know what we have to do to make sure we hit the ground running in the right way when the tournament starts.”

Who is missing from the England squad for the World Cup?

Leah WilliamsonFran Kirby and Beth Mead have all missed out on spots in the World Cup squad because of injuries.

Captain Williamson is out of the England team with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

Maya Le TissierJess Park and Emily Ramsey, meanwhile, have been named on standby.

Wiegman said of the names on standby: “It’s always tough to leave some players out of the squad, but they know they could still be needed if we have any issues before we start the tournament.

“I’m very happy that we have such a professional group.”

Have England ever won the Women’s World Cup?

The Lionesses have never won the Women’s World Cup.

They have participated in the iconic tournament, which started in 1991, seven times.

They reached the semi-finals twice, in 2015 and 2019.

After England’s Euros win in 2022, the team are considered one of the favourites to go all the way.

England beat Germany 2-1 at the tournament, clinching manager Wiegman her second Women’s Euros title.
