Both players appeared to struggle throughout, but Aspinall missed several chances to pile the pressure on his opponent.

After missing three attempts at double-18 the Stockport-born star approached the board with his fist raised.

Aspinall didn’t follow through with his threat to take a swing at the dart board, instead just removing his darts.

Had he made the 36 check-out, he would have closed the score to 5-4.

Smith immediately went on to secure the leg and subsequently progressed to the semi-finals 6-3 to face Luke Humphries.

Fans took to social media to react, with one person writing: “Smith gave him the match on a platter and Aspinall made a mess of it.”

While another commented: “Just one of them nights for the Asp.”

Despite the defeat, The Asp remains fourth in the standings meaning he will qualify for the final at the O2 if he can remain in that position.

Elsewhere, Luke Littler defeated Peter Wright to make it to the final four, while Michael van Gerwen saw off competition from Gerwyn Price.

However, he suffered a 6-5 defeat in a thrilling final, with local-lad Humphries coming out on top.
