Tyson Fury’s dad John warned son ahead of first Deontay Wilder fight he’d ‘never speak to him again’ if he fought him

TYSON FURY once revealed that his father threatened to never speak to him again if he agreed to fight Deontay Wilder the first time.

The Gypsy King demolished the Bronze Bomber in February 2020 with an incredible display to win the WBC heavyweight world title before beating him again in October 2021.

The pair have shared the ring three times, in one of the greatest trilogy series of this generation.

They drew firstly in 2018, but Fury won the following two, most recently an 11th-round knockout in October in the best heavyweight fight for decades.

It has left Wilder, 36, considering retirement but the American has received support from his great rival since.

That capped a remarkable recovery for the Morecambe-based fighter after he had battled back from severe depression.

It was in November 2015 that he first stunned the boxing world with a points victory over unified champ Wladimir Klitschko.

However a planned rematch was cancelled after Fury’s mental health issues began, leading to drug problems and a rapid rise in body weight.

Fury appeared at a press conference for the return fight horrendously out of shape and had his titles stripped before he could defend them.

After a long road to recovery and shedding over 10st following a three-year absence from the ring, he eventually returned to beat Albanian veteran Sefer Seferi in June 2018.

Francesco Pianeta was quickly brushed aside before Fury’s rapid re-elevation took him to a title clash against Wilder that December.

Fury bravely climbed off the mat in the final round of their dramatic draw in Los Angeles after appearing to be KO’d by the American.

And it was a fight his dad John never wanted him to take so soon after his boxing comeback.

In a video released by Xperience VIP in August 2020 that was shared onto the boxer’s Twitter, his father explained how he vowed not to talk to his son if he accepted the Wilder challenge.

John says: “If you do that I’ll never speak to you as long as I live because you will get hurt.

“You’ve just lost 10st in as many months, you’re not ring fit at all, son.

“I said ‘leave it, you’ve had a couple of warm-up fights, your strength ain’t there, you cannot knock a hole in a wet paper bag. Where’s your sense?’

“He said: ‘Dad, I’m a fighting man and if I get beat I get beat. I’m going to do what [Anthony] Joshua is frightened to do and step in the ring.

“‘If he beats me he beats me, the best man will win.’”

John added: “It went from there and the rest is history.

“And it was the best comeback of all-time – who gets up in the 12th round like that? He was out, cold out… divine intervention I tell you.”
