Bayern chiefs had been scouting a new manager for months, but following failed attempts to secure the likes of Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick and Oliver Glasner they turned to Kompany.

The 38-year-old is expected to take his coaching staff to Germany when he completes the move.

That means his assistant, former Premier League star Craig Bellamy, is in line for a new job.

Football fans have been left surprised by the prospect of Bellamy coaching the three-time Champions League winners.

One person even hailed it as the “most Football Manager thing to happen in actual football” this season.

Another wrote: “Kompany going to manage Bayern is like playing Football Manager a few years down the line when all these wacky transfers and appointments happen. Crazy.”

A third commented: “If Vincent Kompany ends up being the next @FCBayernEN manager it’ll be the most Football Manager thing ever. Imagine Craig Bellamy throwing fits in German .”

While a fourth fan said: “Vincent Kompany relegating Burnley and then getting the Bayern Munich job is some proper Football Manager style shenanigans.”
