Tajudeen Abbas Drags Former Kaduna Lawmaker To Court Over Defamation Of Character

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has filed a direct criminal complaint against a former member of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Suleman Wakili.

Abbas is suing Wakili on alleged injurious falsehood and defamation of character.

The alleged offences were contrary to the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State 2017.

The speaker instituted the case through his Legislative Aide, Aliyu Waziri, on Jan. 9, 2023.

He alleged that sometime in November 2022 or thereabout, the defendant published on a social medium in Hausa Language (his Facebook page), a series of injurious and blatant false statements with the knowledge that the publication would harm the reputation and integrity of Abbas.

He further said the publication had tarnished the hard-earned image of Abbas, who is the member representing Zaria Federal Constituency and Speaker House of Representatives.

At the resumed hearing in the Magistrates’ Court sitting at Chediya, GRA Zaria, the complainant, sought an adjournment to enable the representative of the speaker to appear in court.

The counsel to the defendant, A.Y. Mohammed, did not object to the application for adjournment.

The presiding Magistrate, Ibrahim-Adamu Salisu, however, adjourned the case until April 16 for the continuation of the hearing.
