Scottish Aussie Rules player, 25, dies after ‘cardiac arrest’ during match as tributes paid to ‘talented’ team-mate

TRIBUTES have poured in for a “brave and talented” Scots Aussie Rules football player who died during a match.

Ross McGhie, 25, was playing on Saturday for Fife side Kingdom Kangaroos when he took unwell during his team’s first match of the season.

The young sportsman, from Leven, was playing for the Aussie Rules team when it is understood he suffered a cardiac arrest.

The tragic incident happened during the match in Linlithgow against the Glasgow Giants.

Despite the efforts of medics, Ross tragically passed away that night.

His heartbroken family announced the harrowing news on social media.

Ross’ devastated mum Morna Hill said: “Last night I got the phone call that every parent dreads.

“Ross,  my oldest son took unwell whilst playing the game he loved with the friends he loved. 

“Despite the best care of the amazing doctors trying to restart his heart Ross died last night.  Ross was only 25.

“We are all heartbroken.”

Devastated teammates at the Kingdom Kangaroos paid tribute to the young player, who said he was “selfless” and “beloved by all.”

A statement from the club read: “The Kingdom Kangaroos are devastated at the passing of senior player Ross McGhie – a cherished teammate and friend who was beloved by all.

“Incredibly brave and talented, Ross had recently been elevated into the Roos’ leadership group, such was his high standing within the club. He was ever selfless and loved by all within the playing group.

“Our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.”

Bosses at AFL Scotland, who oversee Australian Rules Football clubs in Scotland, said Ross would be missed by all.

A statement read: “Everyone at AFL Scotland is shocked and saddened to hear of Ross’ passing.

“He was a wonderful member of our community and will be deeply missed by all who knew him, played with him & played against him.

“Our deepest condolences to his family, friends and everyone at the Kingdom Kangaroos ARFC at this tragic time.”

Ross was also a senior for Glenrothes Rugby Club, who paid tribute saying: “It’s with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of one of our friends and senior players Ross McGhie.

“Our love and condolences go out to all his friends and family.”
