RKC Waalwijk issue update on Etienne Vaessen after Ajax match suspended and players leave pitch in tears after keeper KO

RKC WAALWIJK have confirmed keeper Etienne Vaessen is “continuing his recovery” after a horrific collision with Ajax’s Brian Brobbey that led to the Eredivisie match being suspended.

The Dutch shot-stopper, 28, was knocked unconscious and laid motionless on the pitch as medics treated him.

Many of RKC Waalwijk’s players could be seen visibly distraught following the incident as some of them left in tears.

Vaessen was taken off the field on a stretcher, before he eventually regained consciousness.

And the club have now issued an update on his condition.

It read: “Following our update last night, we can report that our goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen had a good night and has continued his recovery.

“For Etienne it is important for now to be able to recover in peace in the coming hours and days.

“We would therefore like to ask you to give him and his family the time and rest for this.

“On behalf of everyone within RKC Waalwijk, we wish Etienne, and all the people around him, a lot of strength.

“We hope to see him again at the club soon. ”

Ajax were leading the Eredivisie game 3-2 before it was called off.

The Dutch giants wished Vaessen well, tweeting: “The match has been temporarily halted due to an apparently serious medical situation. We are thinking of you, Etienne.

“This is about more than football. Praying you’re okay, Etienne.”
