Reps Speaks On Regulating Artificial Intelligence, AI, In Nigeria

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, announced on Monday that the 10th National Assembly is set to introduce legislation to provide a legal framework for the regulation and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Nigeria.

Naija News reports that the disclosure came during the matriculation ceremony of the National Institute For Legislative And Democratic Studies (NILDS)-University of Benin (UNIBEN) Post Graduate Programmes and HND Programme in Abuja.

In his address, delivered by the minority leader, Kingsley Chinda, Speaker Abbas highlighted the significance of AI in global development and stressed the importance of Nigeria staying abreast of these advancements to optimize human capital development.

“Many developed countries have advanced their educational systems and continue to explore opportunities in AI. In order to key into this emerging development, the 10th National Assembly will strive to provide a legal framework for regulating the adoption of AI in our country,” Abbas stated.

The speaker explained that the new legislative initiative aims to ensure a balanced labour-capital ratio in Nigeria’s development process.

He encourages NILDS to support the legislature by exploring research opportunities and providing intellectual support necessary for the adoption of AI technologies.

Abbas also emphasized the vital role of education in nation-building and national development, reflecting on his legislative experience and the importance of capacity building.

“In my years as a legislator, I have seen how the capacity-building and knowledge-deepening of the support system around legislators can help them to enhance legislative processes and outcomes,” he added.
