Premier League clubs agree to introduce spending cap but Man Utd one of three clubs to vote against new rule
PREMIER LEAGUE clubs have voted in principle to introduce a spending cap.
The cap will be on a club’s total squad cost, rather than an individual player’s salary.
GettyManchester United are one of three clubs to have opposed the change[/caption]
The cap will be four and a half times the broadcast revenue of the league’s bottom club.
A total of 14 of the 20 clubs are needed to vote in favour of the change, but just three voted against the proposal – Manchester United, Manchester City and Aston Villa.
Chelsea abstained from the vote.
A final vote will take place at the an annual general meeting in June.
If the new cap was to be introduced now it would be £466million.
If passed, it will come into effect at the start of the 2025/26 season.
