Police Confirms Attack On Imo INEC Headquarter, Says Officer Died In Gun Battle

The Imo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed there was an attack on the facility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday morning.

Naija News reported earlier that some unknown gunmen attacked the headquarters of the electoral body located on Port Harcourt road in Owerri, the state capital.

Confirming the attack, the spokesperson for the police in the state, Michael Abattam, told reporters that an officer of the force was killed and another was injured in the attack, which lasted over an hour.

Addressing newsmen at the force headquarters hours after the incident, Abattam said the disturbing sounds of the gunbattle kept the residents of Owerri awake throughout the night.

He revealed that five rifles, two vehicles, charms, locally made bombs, phones, and money were recovered from the slain gunmen.

“They attacked the INEC headquarters in Owerri around 3:00 am. They threw bombs on the roof of the INEC building but unfortunately for them; they were resisted by our men who were guarding the place. They came in four vehicles and were fully armed.

“While they engaged our men on the ground, we reinforced. Noticing that we were stronger, they ran away, abandoning one of their vehicles. We gave them a hot chase towards Onitsha Road. Fortunately, we neutralised three of them,” Abattam noted while parading the lifeless bodies of the gunmen killed.

“Others escaped with bullet wound injuries. Unfortunately, one of our men paid the supreme price. Another one was injured. We recovered two vehicles. We also recovered five rifles, charms, locally made explosives, phones and money and other exhibits,” He added.
