First he beat Serbian Mate Nemes 3-2, before advancing to the semi-finals courtesy of a 7-6 victory over Kyrgyzstan’s Amantur Ismailov.

Nasibov then overcame Azerbaijan’s Hasrat Jafarov in a brutal war to reach the gold medal contest.

Their final four bout finished all square at 3-3.

But Nasibov edged through courtesy of making the final active move.

By the end of the contest, his injuries were clear for all to see.

One of his eyes was virtually swollen shut.

While the other showed mild bruising.

Greco-Roman wrestling only allows athletes to attack while using their arms and upper body.

Nasibov will have to quickly dust himself down for tomorrow’s final.

He will compete for a gold medal against Iran‘s Saeid Esmaeili Leivesi.

Nasibov will be hoping to go one better than in Tokyo three years ago, where he earned a silver medal in the same event.
