Ola Aina Mocks Tomori Who Couldn’t Replace Maguire In England Squad
Super Eagles defender, Ola Aina, has mocked AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori for not being considered for call-ups to England’s Three Lions squad.
Just like how Ola Aina was eligible to play for England, his country of birth, but chose to play for his ancestral home, Nigeria, Fikayo Tomori had the chance to play for Nigeria or Canada (his country of birth) but chose to play for his adopted country, England.
Unfortunately for him, after a couple of call-ups, he was sidelined and was never given a chance in the Three Lions squad again when he has already lost his eligibility to switch nationality.
Despite his prolific form at AC Millan last year, the center-back who led the Italian side to win the Scudetto in the 2021-2022 season, wasn’t taken to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Instead, England’s coach, Gareth Southgate, went along with embattled Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire, who has been heavily criticized for his poor defending.
Ola Aina, 26, who joined Nottingham Forest this summer, said he used to joke with Fikayo Tomori, 25, over his decision to snub Nigeria for England, where he has not been given a chance to play for almost two years now.
“At first, I wanted to say maybe it is because he is playing out of England, but then it’s not like he is out of England and he is playing for Torino or somewhere worse than Torino,” Ola Aina told TBG podcast.
“He is playing for AC Milan, you know. That’s no joke, they even won the league and made it to the Champions League final, and even if they haven’t done that, the team, the history itself, talks for itself.
“It’s really strange because especially the year they won the Scudetto he was doing very well more than the man back home.
“If you look at the stats Tomori has been better than him (Maguire).”
Ola Aina added, “That England thing, honestly, it’s easy for me to say it to him; sometimes I joke with him as I told you about the Naija thing (switching to Nigeria).
“It’s easy for me to say that to him because I wasn’t in the position where I could get an England debut. I am just talking from my own experience.”
