The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reiterated that it prefers candidates contesting national working committee (NWC) positions to emerge through consensus.
This is at it added that members who feel otherwise about a consensus candidate would be allowed to test their popularity at the polls.
This position was made known on Friday by the Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule who is the chairman of the media and publicity sub-committee of the APC national convention.
He submitted that the consensus option ensures the process is faster and rancour-free.
Sule however added that it doesn’t mean the APC would deny aspirants the opportunity to contest or for delegates to vote as anyone who disagrees with the consensus candidate would be allowed to slug it out at the polls.
He stated this during a press conference on Friday ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for Saturday (tomorrow) at the Eagle Square in Abuja.
He said: “We have mentioned over and over, as far as our party is concerned, we have all the three options in our constitution and the number one choice always in our party is consensus because it creates a rancour-free convention,” he said.
“The reason being that all stakeholders from the various zone will seat, agree and all aspirants will agree and sign off before you go into the convention. So our first choice is always consensus and we are still on that first choice.
“However, democracy demands, even the constitution demands that if that doesn’t work, we would go ahead and look at other options. But right now that remains our option — our number one.”
On the possibility of a unity list emerging, Governor Sule said it is possible with the consideration of consensus candidates.
“If you are talking about consensus, you must have a unity list because that is the whole essence of consensus,” he said.
“If you are having consensus, you have people, aspirants, stakeholders and constituency that have agreed.
“In that case, that name automatically would be adopted. That is the meaning of the unity list. That is how unity list would be put together.”
