Mauricio Pochettino Says Chelsea Are Looking For Nkunku’s Backup

Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that the club is trying to sign a new attacking player in the wake of Christopher Nkunku’s injury.

The 25-year-old France forward who joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig this summer for a transfer fee worth £52 million is expected to miss “an extended period” of time after having surgery on his injured left knee.

Nkunku sustained the injury while playing against Borussia Dortmund in a pre-season friendly in Chicago.

Before going down with the injury, Nkunku made an impression during the preseason by scoring three goals in five games.

Ahead of Chelsea’s 2023-2024 Premier League opener against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, the club’s new manager, Mauricio Pochettino, said, “We are working in the market because we are going to miss an offensive player like this.

“The club is working, trying to find a solution for maybe short-term, medium, and long-term to add the right profile for the team to perform from now.”

The Argentine tactician added, “We feel very sorry about him. He was doing well, he is very important for us.

“Now it’s about not thinking too much about the injuries and being positive about when he can be back with us.”

Aside from losing their new signing, Christopher Nkunku, Chelsea will go into the new season without their regular starters like Kai Havertz, N’Golo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly, Mateo Kovacic, Edouard Mendy, Mason Mount, and Christian Pulisic who have all joined new clubs this summer.

Mauricio Pochettino is currently rebuilding the team with the additions of the injured Nkunku and other new arrivals like Angelo Gabriel, Diego Moreira, Robert Sanchez, Nicolas Jackson, Lesley Ugochukwu, and Axel Disasi.
