Benfica have completed the £5million capture of the 21-year-old after triggering the buy option in his loan.

It is understood the deal includes both a buy-back and sell-on clause for United.

Fernandez’s exit comes just hours after United’s FA Cup triumph at Wembley Stadium.

Erik ten Hag’s side beat rivals Manchester City on Saturday thanks to goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

However, Fernandez was not involved having joined Benfica on loan in January.

He went on to make 16 appearances for the club, scoring once and providing a single assist.

His displays helped the Portuguese giants finish second in the league after a slow start to his loan.

Fernandez had struggled to convince Benfica to make the deal permanent following his arrival, before going on to appear in each of their last six matches of the campaign, starting five of them.

The Spain under-21 international now leaves Old Trafford four years after joining from Real Madrid.

He failed to make a single first-team appearance during his time in England.

Fernandez was included in the matchday squad five times in the Premier League, though.

The youngster also spent time out on loan at Preston and Granada before moving to Benfica earlier this year.
