LOOK BEYOND THE SURFACE–THERE IS MORE TO IT!
“But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” 1 Sam. 16:7 (NIV)
When God has chosen a man, only God has the identity of the man; because human prescription cannot meet the standard of God’s description! When Israelites desperately needed a King over them, without being patient with God; God instructed Prophet Samuel to anoint Saul to be King over Israel. Although Saul was chosen by God because of Israelites` desperation, Saul was not God’s choice for the nation of Israel! As time goes on, it shows that Saul was never God’s choice of King for Israel; because King Saul worked against the will of God! King Saul showed disregard for God Almighty, as he tried to take the place of Prophet Samuel–offering sacrifice he wasn`t ordained to perform!
In the preceding scripture, Prophet Samuel was performing his duty to anoint another King in the place of King Saul. Because, God had told Prophet Samuel that, He had rejected King Saul from being a King in Israel. Therefore, he (Prophet Samuel) should go to the house of Jesse to anoint a man, God would show him. Where the prophet was to carry out his duty; he asked Mr. Jesse to line up all his male children; but Mr. Jesse lined up 7 children out of 8 children he had; left one (David) behind in the bush! When the firstborn surfaced for the prophet to observe who God had chosen; the prophet judged from his physical eyes observation by looking at the outward fittings of the firstborn! The prophet showed this spiritual inconsequential attitude towards all the 7 sons of Mr. Jesse; but God constantly rebuked the prophet not to look to the outward parts of men to determine His choice of leadership! In other words, God was saying to the prophet to look beyond the surface of human beings and anything in life. After God rebuked Samuel, he (Samuel) had to ask Jesse if all the children he presented were the only sons he had! That was where David’s whereabouts unveiled; and when David arrive the scene, God, who sees beyond the surface, commanded the prophet to arise and anoint David.
The differences between King Saul and David were: King Saul was an incumbent King, while David was an unknown pre-King. King Saul was a giant in stature, while David could be a dwarf in nature compare to King Saul. King Saul was a notable and famous personality, while David was an unknown personality. King Saul was a major significant in his father’s house, while David was an insignificant in his father’s house. Therefore, looking at the physical identities of King Saul, it would have been possible for Prophet Samuel to have been deceived by his natural mental senses of selecting a leader! King Saul had all the physical qualities to being a King, but he lacked the spiritual qualities to being a king! David may not have had the physical qualities to being a King, but he had spiritual qualities to being a King.
The lessons God wants every one of us to learn here are:
– To represent God anywhere, you need God to act for God!
– Don’t judge for God; let God judge through you.
– Don`t use your position or person to guarantee your steps to be right in life.
– Take your eyes away from the physical things when running an errand for God.
– Look beyond the surface of everything, in order to get the real thing it carries.
CONCLUSION
You need to look beyond the problems you are going through right now. You need to look beyond the family you came from to determining your progress in life. You need to look beyond your bank account content to planning your dream. You need to look beyond your environment, to determining your placement in life. Stop underrating your life and that of others; because God sees beyond the surface of things! Learn to see with your spiritual eyes in everything you do in life; because the spiritual controls the physical. It is not all that glitter is gold; they say. To move with your human senses is to miss the real things in life! But to move with your supernatural senses is to hit the proper goal in life. Prophet Samuel tried to use his mental senses to judge supernatural assignment; his prophetic mantle became weak! But when he turned to his spiritual arsenal; he knew what to do to anoint the right King for God. It doesn’t matter how everyone sees it, try to see it the way God sees it.
