Jordan Henderson faces THIRD transfer in a year with Ajax future in doubt as struggling club set to miss huge windfall

JORDAN HENDERSON’S future at Ajax is in doubt with the club needing to cut costs, according to reports.

The former Liverpool captain joined the Dutch giants in January after a nightmare six months at Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia.

Henderson arrived as a free agent but is among the club highest earners.

The England star was on a supposed £350,000-a-week in the Middle East – before accepting a pay cut down to £85,000-a-week to seal his move to Ajax.

But with the Amsterdam-based side in danger of not qualifying for next season’s European competitions, the club may have to balance the books by offloading Henderson.

Ajax currently sit fifth in the Eredivisie table, meaning they could make the Europa League qualifying rounds or the Conference League.

But teams in the Champions League will see an extra £372million in prize money given out to the 36 sides in the group stages.

Ajax missing out on this windfall could force the club into selling key players.

Henderson and ex-Premier League star Steven Bergwijn could depart, according to The Athletic.

And should the central midfielder leave before July 27, it would be his third transfer in a year.

Ajax are set for a busy summer as they remain in the hunt for a new manager.

Current boss John van’t Schip is stepping down at the end of the season.

Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter has held talks over replacing him – but he has rejected the offer.

Meanwhile, under-fire Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been linked with a return to his former side should he be axed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
