Jockey banned for ‘surfing’ on a horse in extraordinary scenes at Ludlow races

A ROOKIE jockey has been banned after ‘surfing’ on a horse in a chaotic race that saw two other jockeys smash to the ground.

Conditional Daire Davis caused all sorts of mayhem when he went to take the wrong course at Ludlow on Thursday.

Daire Davis was suspended for 21 days after he was found guilty of “improper riding” in extraordinary scenes at Ludlow.

Davis was officially found guilty of ‘improper riding’ aboard Fergal O’Brien’s Faha Belle in the helter-skelter mares’ novice hurdle over 2m5f.

The 22-year-old moved his leading horse onto the wrong course turning for home, leading Von Hallers to clip heels and spectacularly unseat David Bass.

Davis attempted to move his horse back onto the correct track but Faha Belle smashed through the running rail and unseated Davis.

As he went airborne he incredibly landed on top of Kit’s Coty, who was being ridden by Tom Bellamy.

For a split second both jockeys ended up riding the same horse until Davis was chucked to the ground.

Racing TV’s report of the incident said Davis was ‘surfing’ on the other horse, while one punter joked Tony Hawk would have been proud of his rail slide.

Bellamy then got unseated and miraculously avoided injury as the other runners thundered over his head.

No jockeys or horses were harmed in the almighty pile-up.

The stewards’ report read: “An enquiry was held to consider interference turning into the home straight when Faha Belle, ridden by Daire Davis, interfered with Von Hallers, ridden by David Bass, and Kit’s Coty, ridden by Tom Bellamy.

“Being a 7lb claimer Davis was offered accompaniment, but declined.

“Davis was suspended for 21 days for improper riding as he moved his mount right-handed onto the incorrect course, causing Faha Belle to clip heels and unseat Bass.

“Having realised his error, Davis then manoeuvred his mount sharply left-handed, back onto the correct course and into a tightly grouped number of runners at the front of the field, where his mount fell having gone through the island railing differentiating the chase and hurdle courses.

“It resulted in Davis unseating onto Kit’s Coty, which further resulted in Bellamy unseating.”

One hour after this carnage unfolded a member of the groundstaff was run over by horses at the start of a Carlisle race.

Footage captured the incredible moment the man bizarrely ran in front of horses as the starter waved his flag.
