Insecurity: You Are The Father Of The State – Abe Begs Wike Over 2023 Elections

The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Rivers State, Senator Magnus Abe has appealed to the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike to do everything necessary to prevent criminals from taking over the state.

Abe pointed out that politicians must not be allowed to plunge the state into chaos because of selfish ambitions.

Naija News reports the former lawmaker stated this when members of the Southern Kaduna Peoples Forum and the Middle Belt Forum paid him a solidarity visit.

He spoke against the backdrop of the recent outburst by Wike in which he disclosed his recent findings about unhealthy plans by some politicians ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain while speaking during a Sunday night broadcast said he has been informed that some unnamed politicians were recruiting hoodlums to disrupt processes before and during the forthcoming polls.

Wike said the revelation, based on intelligence reports further suggested that some owners of hotels and entertainment spots were renting out their spaces to the unnamed political groups for the gathering of the said thugs across the state.

The governor vowed not to take the intelligence report lightly.

In his reaction, Abe in a statement through his spokesperson, Parry Saroh Benson, cautioned that the security situation in Rivers must not be allowed to degenerate because of politics.

The SDP guber candidate added that the people of Rivers must be allowed to freely choose their leader while calling on the politicians to avoid politics of bitterness and antagonism.

He said: “my attention has been drawn to the State Broadcast by Governor Nyesom Wike where he expressed fears and reservations about politicians meeting cultists in Hotels, bars, resorts and other entertainment centers to plan evil against one another.

“I was particularly disturbed when I saw the name of my party, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) mentioned in that broadcast.

“My own concern and prayer is that this election cannot return Rivers State to the old place of fear, to the old place of challenges and crisis that we used to have in previous elections.

“I want to appeal to His Excellency, that he is our Governor, whether we are members of SDP, APC, PDP or whatever political parties we belong to; we are all Rivers men and women and our objective is to choose a leader for our people that will carry us forward, not to bring cultists and fight one another.”

He further suggested that a security summit should be organized where all political leaders will be invited to share their ideas on how to have peaceful elections before, during and after the 2023 elections in the state.

“If there are genuine concerns about security in the state, I will expect the governor as a friend and father of the State, to call all of us to sit down together and share ideas on how to go forward into this election in a peaceful, convivial atmosphere in which everybody will be free to participate.

“Whether the governor likes it or not, it is the responsibility of the governor to provide a peaceful and conducive atmosphere for all of us and I will plead that we come together and talk to one another”.

“I will appeal to my fellow politicians, the governor has expressed his security concerns, let us not begin to attack one another on the basis of that, instead let us sit down and look for solutions that will enable us cross these challenges without hitches.

2023 Elections Will Be Peaceful

Despite the warnings and developments, Abe expressed optimism that the election in Rivers State will be peaceful.

“Our state will be peaceful. I believe that Rivers people all know that without peace there can be no progress, without peace, there can be no prosperity, without peace, there is no future,” he said.
