He is best in a big field and comes here fresh having not run since going close in hot company at Newbury in April.

MODERN GAMES (3.20 Ascot, nb)

Had five lengths in hand when winning the Grade 1 Woodbine Stakes last time and is best over this distance.

ELDAR ELDAROV (1.25 Ascot, treble)

Brilliant winner of the St Leger who will relish moving up in distance here.

Templegate’s Ascot verdicts

ASCOT

1.25

ELDAR ELDAROV was an impressive St Leger winner and can make the most of the 9lb he’s receiving from most of his rivals.

He relished every yard of the 1m6f at Doncaster and was finding more at the line. He should be right at home in the ground and can take another step forward here.

Trueshan has won the past two runnings of this but has blotted his copybook a little since winning the Northumberland Plate carrying a huge weight.

He may have been feeling the effects of that effort when third in the Goodwood Cup before Coltranegot the better of him fair and square in the Doncaster Cup.

He had his favoured soft ground there, which is a concern.

If he comes back to his best he’ll turn that form around but there’s a slight question mark over him.

Waterville scythed through the Irish Ces field to win that hot handicap going away last time. This is a hike in class but he’s another getting the three-year-old’s allowance and Aidan O’Brien knows what he’s doing.

Coltrane needs another step forward to follow up his Town Moor win.

2.00

ROHAAN has looked a Group 1 winner in waiting for a while and this looks a good chance for veteran trainer David Evans to land his first Group 1.

This four-year-old has gone close in this highest class a couple of times, including third in the Haydock Sprint Cup last month.

He is best over this trip and likes give in the ground. His Wokingham win plus a Group 3 success here last time shows his liking for the track and Adam Kirby has a good record up the straight course.

Frankie has a big chance on board Kinross who blew his rivals away to take the Foret at Longchamp’s Arc meeting.

That was his third win in a row and he put in a solid effort in the Platinum Jubilee at the Royal meeting.

His stamina will be an asset and he has no shortage of speed.

Creative Force took this 12 months ago and was a cracking second in the Platinum Jubilee before a solid fourth in the July Cup.

He’s not run since then but Charlie Appleby will have him fit and he’s William Buick’s choice over Naval Crown.

Art Power was fourth in this last season and ran right up to his best at The Curragh 20 days ago.

That gives him a chance, while Castle Star comes over from Ireland with place claims.

2.40

STAY ALERT did well to win a Newbury Group 3 last time after meeting all kinds of trouble in running.

She missed the break and had the door slammed in her face before being switched and picking up well in the final furlong.

It’s still early days for Hughie Morrison’s filly who stays strongly and has more to offer.

Eternal Pearl made it four wins on the spin at Newmarket last time when coming with a strong late run.

This daughter of Frankel has lots of stamina and no little class which makes her a big threat.

Emily Upjohn has had a break since finishing last in the King George in July.

She was beaten on the nod in the Oaks before that so has quality and looks dangerous for Gosden and Dettori.

Sea La Rosa was impressive when taking the Group 1 Royallieu over 1m6f in France ahead of Emily Dickinson.

They could both do with more rain to bring their stamina into play and would come right into this should the heavens open.

Mimikyu is another who stays further and won the Group 2 Park Hill at Donny with plenty in hand last time out.

3.20

MODERN GAMES has done most of his racing abroad where he won the French 2,000 Guineas and took the top-class Woodbine Mile in Canada by five lengths last time.

His last British run saw him go close in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and this mile is ideal.

This is likely to be the softest ground he’s run on but he’ll be hard to beat if handling it.

Inspiral has three Group 1s on her CV and gets weight from the colts too.

She kicked off the season winning the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and matched that form in France last time.

She likes it fast but handled softer going fine when winning last year’s Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket. Frankie can take her close.

Jadoomi is rising through the ranks and had four lengths to spare when scooting in at Leopardstown last month.

This is hotter opposition but she goes on any ground and sees out this trip well.

The Revenant comes over from France after a decent effort over this trip at Longchamp.

He was fourth in this last year and needs a downpour as he’s a proper mudlark.

Similar comments apply to Bayside Boy who loved it bottomless when taking Sandown Listed honours last month.

He did it well but this is a lot hotter.

4.00

This should be a lap of honour for BAAEED who is the best horse we’ve seen since Frankel.

He may not have had the hottest of opposition but he’s made some classy horses look ordinary in winning all 10 of his races.

An impressive six in a row have been Group 1s and he looked better than ever when stepped up to this trip for the first time when winning York’s Juddmonte International by six lengths without breaking sweat.

Instead of moaning about the races William Haggas hasn’t run him in, we should enjoy what this great colt has achieved and only bottomless ground would be a worry on this farewell.

Derby winner Adayar dropped to this trip for a facile win at Doncaster on his return from 11 months off.

It’s asking a lot to step up and beat Baaeed after that but he can follow him home.

Haggas has every chance of a one-two with Royal Champion who impressed at Ayr last month and stays well.

He can edge out another stablemate in My Prospero who went close in the St James’s Palace Stakes.

Bay Bridge is another place player who has run well in this grade before.

4.40

MIGRATION was just pipped in a red-hot handicap at Newbury last time out in April.

Trainer David Menuisier is more than capable of getting one ready at home and he’ll be much fresher than most of these rivals.

This trip is ideal and he could be better than a handicapper.

Blue For You was unlucky over 7f at York last time when finishing with a full tank.

He’ll relish moving up to this distance and has a big chance off the same mark.

Tyrrhenian Sea is consistent and put in another good effort at Doncaster last month. He likes some cut in the ground.

Escobar won this three years ago and is in cracking form after winning here over 7f last time.

Astro King has had a little help from the handicapper, while big-field winner Montatham is a big price for William Haggas on his first run of the year.
