Ex-Sokoto Deputy Governor, Shehu Shagari Dumps PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has lost the membership of former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Barrister Mukhtar Shehu Shagari.

Naija News understands that Shagari had in March 2022, declared his intention to contest the state governorship seat under the platform of the PDP.

Shagari, however, in a statement dated Wednesday, May 25, announced his resignation from PDP, stating betrayal as his reason for withdrawing from the party.

He takes the blame further on the State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, accusing him of not keeping to his words.

He said: “I wish to bring to your notice that I, Mukhtar Shehu Shagari have from today ceased to be a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.”

According to him, the party deceitfully claims to be a bastion of democracy but has instead become a party of the highest bidder without due consideration to his labour, commitment, sacrifice, investments and service since 1998.

Shagari added saying: “Apart from my numerous sacrifices and service to the party, the so-called Peoples Democratic Party has no reward system regardless of one’s loyalty and faithfulness. It is my conviction that the ideals of the founding fathers of the Peoples Democratic Party have been completely eroded and are not worthy to be called a Democratic Party.”

The former Deputy Governor said it was most disheartening that Tambuwal has proven to be a man who does not keep to his words.

“It is also sad and unfortunate that the PDP in Sokoto is dead and buried during his tenure as the Governor of Sokoto State because of his draconian, slippery, cunning, crafty and insincere style of leadership,” he said.

He lamented that the PDP had unfortunately become a “cash and carry” party for the highest bidder to serve the interest of a minority few who have hijacked the body and soul of the party.”

While appealing to his supporters to remain calm, Shehu Shagari said he will publicly announce his next steps soon.

Shehu Shagari was a former two-term Minister of Water Resources under President Olusegun Obasanjo and a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party in Sokoto State, Naija News reports.
