He was then put on a ventilator to after doctors found he had an “acute disease related to the brain”.

An update from his club FC Midtjylland has now revealed Olsson has “several small blood clots on both sides of the brain” which is the result of a rare inflammatory condition in the brain vessels.

In a statement released earlier today, the Danish outfit described Olsson’s condition as “stable”, though doctors are seeing little progress on his condition.

However, a big boost is the news that he “has an increasing degree of consciousness”.

Midtjylland said Olsson remains in intensive care but is surrounded by his immediate family and some club staff while he is treated by specialists.

The club said doctors will slowly try to wean him off the ventilator he is connected to.

It is uncertain how long he will need treatment and his final prognosis.

Club CEO Claus Steinlein said: “I would like to thank the public and the press for having shown warm-hearted support, respect and consideration in recent times towards Kristoffer as well as his family and the healthcare staff.

“It means an incredible amount. Also for us at FC Midtjylland, where players and staff are obviously very affected by Kristoffer’s situation.

“Therefore, I would like to thank you for the fact that our message has been received and continues to be respected.”

Olsson played for Arsenal between 2011 and 2014 and made one senior appearance for the club in the League Cup.

He came on as a substitute against West Brom and scored a spot-kick as the Gunners won on penalties.

When the news was first announced a Gunners statement added: “Get well soon, Kristoffer. We wish you a full and speedy recovery.”

The midfielder has been capped 47 times by Sweden.
