Europa League: Arsenal Out, Juventus, Man United, Roma Qualify For Quarter-Finals

The Europa League round of 16 rounded off on Thursday night with some unbelievable outcomes.

The biggest result of the Europa League second leg was the game between Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon which ended in favour of the Portuguese side.

Arsenal, the current Premier League table-toppers went to Portugal a week ago and got a 2-2 draw and were expected to complete the job at the Emirates Stadium last night.

Unfortunately, the Portuguese side came from a goal down at the Emirates to equalize thanks to Gonçalves’ stunning 62nd-minute strike.

Even though Porto’s Ugarte was red-carded in extra time, the Portuguese side held on to the 1-1 draw. And then knockout Arsenal 3-5 on penalties.

Before then, Juventus visited Europa-Park Stadion for the second leg of the Europa League second leg against SC Freiburg. As expected, the Italian team came out victorious 0-3 on aggregate.

Feyenoord welcomed Shakhtar Donetsk to the De Kuip stadium and demolished their visitors 7-1 on the night. The Dutch club scaled through to the next round of the competition 8-2 on aggregate.

Manchester United, the only surviving Premier League club in the Europa League after Arsenal’s exit, booked their place in the quarter-finals after doing a double on Real Betis. The English side scaled through 1-5 on aggregate.

Marcus Rashford celebrates his goal against Real Betis on Thursday.

Fenerbahçe defeated their visitors, Sevilla 1-0 in the second leg but that was not enough to overturn the 2-0 away defeat in the first leg. Hence, they crashed out 1-2 on aggregate.

As for Ferencváros, they ended their journey at home against Leverkusen. The game ended 2-0 in favour of the visiting Leverkusen. The German club scaled through 4-0 on aggregate.

Jose Mourinho’s Roma could not defeat Real Sociedad in Spain as the second leg ended in a 0-0 draw. But that was not a problem as Roma scaled through thanks to their 2-0 win in the first leg.

While Union Saint-Gilloise slammed their visitors Union Berlin 3-0 at home to secure their spot in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. They scaled through 6-3 on aggregate.

All the qualified teams will know their quarter-final opponents later today, March 17. The draw will take place in Nyon, Switzerland at 1 PM (Nigeria Time).
