Conor McGregor called out for history-making title fight by UFC champ at America’s most iconic fight arena

LEON EDWARDS has proposed giving Conor McGregor a history-making UFC title fight at Madison Square Garden.

McGregor became the first UFC champion to ever holds two-division belts at the same time when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez in 2016.

He added the 155lb lightweight strap to his 145lb featherweight belt at the iconic MSG – but no one has ever been a three-weight ruler.

So Edwards – who defends his welterweight title against Belal Muhammad on July 27 – is ready to give McGregor a crack at history.

He said on The MMA Hour: “Why not? Let’s give him the opportunity to become three-division world champion.

“Give me the opportunity to take out a guy like Conor McGregor. New York, that would be perfect. That is the fight.

“I feel like he’s got to take out Michael, I take out ‘No-one-remembers-his-name’ and we’ll go from there. We’ll go to New York, MSG, let’s go!

“That’s the fight. We’ve got business to take care of, but that’s the fight. That’s what needs to happen and it should happen.”

McGregor, 35, returns after three years out on June 29 against Michael Chandler, 38, at UFC 303.

A month after, Edwards, 32, defends his 170lb gold against challenger Muhammad, 34, at UFC 304 three years on from their no-contest bout.

Inside McGregor’s Notorious lifestyle

With more sides to his personality than an Octagon, Conor McGregor’s rise has been an enthralling watch.

Going from UFC icon to entrepreneur and Hollywood star, the Irishman has transcended the sport he helped bring to the masses.

He has four children with fiancee Dee Devlin and the family enjoy a lavish lifestyle.

McGregor has not fought in UFC since breaking his leg in a trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier in 2021.

That has not stopped him amassing a net worth of over £150m thanks to his Proper No Twelve whiskey and fashion line.

And he is due to return to the Octagon at UFC 303 in an eagerly-awaited headline clash with Michael Chandler.

McGregor also starred alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the Amazon Prime remake of classic movie Road House, although he is dreading his mum seeing one X-rated scene.

Notorious turned up to the premiere in a £60,000 suit that was outdone by his £460k watch.

The only thing sharper than his fashion sense is his tongue and the Dubliner has several bitter spats under his belt, including with UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov.

That row led to one of his biggest controversies in 2018 as he travelled 3,000 miles to confront Khabib in a vicious attack on his bus.

He pleaded guilty to assault after punching a man in a pub in 2018 and had his £150k Bentley seized by police for driving offences four years later.

Joe Rogan lashed out at McGregor in a four-letter outburst and the Irishman has also fired shots at Jake Paul, KSI and Tommy Fury.

Boxing great Floyd Mayweather also has McGregor on his enemy list after the pair clashed in a cross-sport bout in 2017.

Edwards backs himself and McGregor to emerge victorious to help set up the super-fight at the most famous American arena of all time.

He said: “I heard a little noise but nothing to get excited about.

“Like I said, we’ve both got fights on our hands that we need to get past first before getting that far in.

“I have to go out there and take of Belal, he goes out there and takes care of what he needs to take care of, and we’ll go from there.”
