Atiku Opens Up On Deleting Tweet Condeming Deborah’s Murder

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has again justified his reason for the deletion of a tweet condemning the killing of Deborah Yakubu, a 200-level Home Economics student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto.

Speaking on Sunday night during a live discussion on Channels Television’s People’s Townhall, Atiku said he deleted the initial tweet because it didn’t get the necessary approval from him before it was posted.

The former Vice President said he later condemned the killing of the young lady in subsequent statements because it was clearly done outside the tenets of what Islam provides.

He said, “I asked the tweet to be deleted because I normally approve every tweet. So, since I didn’t approve it, I said, ‘delete it’. If you read my subsequent statements on that murder, I condemned it.

“There is nowhere it is said or it is an injunction in the Islamic faith that you can go and take somebody’s life, nowhere, it has to be through due process.”

Naija News recalls that Deborah was lynched and burnt to death by her fellow students who were Muslims for alleged blasphemy on a WhatsApp platform on May 12.

On May 13, in a post on his verified tweeter handle, Atiku condemned the incident and called for the arrest of those behind the murder.

He had said, “There cannot be a justification for a such gruesome murder. Deborah Yakubu was murdered, and all those behind her death must be brought to justice.

“My condolences to her family and friends.”

Following the development, Atiku’s tweet condemning the killing of Deborah was greeted with stark criticisms by extremists, who threatened to punish him at the 2023 polls.

Within minutes, Atiku’s post was deleted and led to another round of criticism from Nigerians, who felt he cared more about votes than Nigerian lives.

However, the former Vice President made another tweet condemning the killing of the student after backlash.
