AFCON 2021: After Buhari’s Call Tunisia Knock Nigeria Out

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been knocked out of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) holding in Cameroon.

A second half goal from Msakni was enough to send the three time African champions out of the tournament.

Nigeria’s 0-1 loss to the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia is coming hours after President Muhammadu Buhari had a video call with the team alongside the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare and President of the Nigerian Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick.

Buhari had during the call urged the Super Eagles to bring the AFCON trophy back to the country.

Presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, qouted Buhari as saying, “You’ve been doing Nigeria proud. You’ve been winning. Please keep on winning. The Federal Government is supporting you, and I say thank you to all the technical crew and the players. Please keep doing the country proud.”

But the Super Eagles could not advance to the Quarter Final stage of the AFCON as they succumbed to a one nil defeat to their Northern African rivals.

Everton’s Alex Iwobi was also shown a red card for a stump on his opponent which only complicated Nigeria’s push for an equaliser.

Glorious chances were also missed by Umar Sadiq and Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi.

Following Nigeria’s knockout, all attention now shifts to the 2022 World Cup qualifies against historical rivals Ghana.
