2023: INEC Speaks On APC National Convention

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has not notified it of its national convention slated for February.

On November 22, 2021, Chairman of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and Governor of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu, had announced that the party’s national convention will hold in February.

He made the announcement alongside the Caretaker Chairman of the party, Mai Mala Buni, after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in Aso Rock Villa.

However, INEC has said that the ruling party had not communicated its plans to hold a convention and has not fulfilled Section 85 (1) of the Electoral Act.

Speaking with The PUNCH, spokesman to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, said the APC is required to serve the commission a 21-day notice as provided by the Electoral Act but still had time to do so.

He said, “Before any political party conducts its convention for the election of officers, it is required to serve the commission a 21-day notice as provided by Section 85 (1) the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

“Between now and the end of February is more than the three weeks required by law. Therefore, while the party has not served any notice yet, there is still time to do so.”
